The growing ease of GPS has made reading a Map and Compass almost obsolete, but what happens when the batteries die, or you have no service and can't establish a start point for your phone? Being able to navigate by analog is becoming a lost art, but there is more to it than just reading poins on a map. Converting those data points to action is a skill in of itself. Knowing how to read terrain and adjust your route based on danger areas is just another layer of being self reliant.
